Canada geese can eat up to 4 pounds of grass… That’s almost 2 square feet of grass a day!
The Canada Geese population has significantly increased since the 20th century due to the rise of residential geese. Because of the lack of predators and the increase of manicured lawns, geese populations have soared. Their droppings pollute local waterways and contain pathogens that can make you sick.
Resident geese are Canada Geese that stay year round unlike their migrating cousins. Environmental conservationists and aviculturists bred the bird during the late 20th century to prevent the extinction of the species. The geese were raised year round at the farms and then released into the wild. They learned that it wasn’t necessary to migrate to the north for breeding like their ancestors. Geese have plenty of food and resources to raise goslings in suburban America.
Nesting season can occur anytime from February to June. Geese will nest in the same spot or very close to where they nested the year before. Once hatched and reached reproductive maturity, they will also nest close to where they were originally born.
Canada Geese often attack when one gets close to their nest. Nests in the area could be hidden and tough to locate. If you suspect a nest on your property, give us a call and we can figure out the best way of dealing with the issue. Nests cannot be moved to another location. Permits and nest reporting are required as per federal regulations. We do participate in egg addling, which is done by using oil to coat the eggs. This can only be done humanely if nests are discovered before the incubation period.
Canada geese can poop up to 2-3 pounds a day! They poop every 20 minutes or so. When sleeping, they will sit or stand in one spot and poop throughout the night. This produces a pile of goose poop that almost resembles a large dog poop!
